How MyFone® Works
My Forward vs My Plus
Still not sure what VoIP actually means? Here’s the plain-English version and how it decides whether your business phone forwards to your mobile or runs through an app.
What is VoIP
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In plain English: it’s a way of making and receiving phone calls over the internet instead of a traditional phone line. No copper wire running into the building, no engineer visit, just a number that works over broadband or mobile data.
How it actually works with MyFone
Every MyFone plan starts the same way: you get a real UK landline number, 01, 02 or 03, a proper local or national number, that you can put on your website, business cards and Google listing. What happens after someone dials that number depends on which plan you’re on.
My Forward: Your MyFone number simply forwards the call straight to your existing mobile or landline, the same way call forwarding has always worked. No app to answer calls in, no internet connection required to receive them, it just rings through. This is the simplest option if you want a professional number without changing how you already take calls.
My Plus: This is full VoIP. Instead of forwarding to your existing phone, your number connects to the MyFone softphone app (iOS & Android) on your mobile or desktop. Calls come in and go out over wifi or mobile data, so you can answer as “Hello, [Business Name]” from anywhere, home, the road, a co-working space, using one app rather than juggling a personal and business number.
Got more than one location or department?
That’s where My Plus comes in. If calls need to reach different teams or sites, sales, support, a second branch, My Plus lets you add extensions and a call menu (IVR), so callers can choose who they need or get routed automatically. This isn’t available on My Forward, since that plan simply forwards every call to one number. Once you’re managing more than one person or department, My Plus is the plan built for it.
Do I need anything special?
- My Forward: no, it works with any phone you already have.
- My Plus: you’ll need the softphone app and a decent wifi or data connection. No special hardware required, though a VoIP desk phone can be added if you prefer physical handsets.
